  2. It’s really important to know something about the culture of the families – especially if the family is a first-generation immigrant. Like you said, some cultures will expect teachers to have all the answers and they will not understand cooperative learning. They might also be watching for numerous, high-stakes exams.

    Truthfully, the best way to learn about the cultures is to spend time overseas teaching in international schools. Short of that, ask your ESL specialists lots of questions. Intentionally get to know the second-generation parents of a given culture. They can explain the struggles and questions their families had with schools.

    A good book to readi is Hofestede’s _Software of the Mind_. Hofestede wrote about culture after surveying IBM employees from over 170 countries. His books will give you some charts and graphs to help you better understand the ways in which people of various cultures see the world.
